NEY YORK, U.S.A.

THE NEW YORK WORLD TRADE CENTER.

Project: The World Trade Center, intended to offer greater facilities to the international business world, is under construction by the New York Port Authorithy. For the first time this Center will offer co-ordination between business firms and goverment agencies in order to expedite a new operation involving international trade. Furthermore, a centralisation of all the facilities can cut down the procedures, and hence, the operating cost of any trading firm; this aspect would certainly contribute to trade between all nations.

Location: The Center will be built on an area of 64, 750 sq meters, located on the west side of Lower Manhattan. This location has been traditionally the focal point of Americas international trade.

The World Trade Center is bordered by West St. , Vesey St., Liberty St. and Church St., in the Wall Street area.

Cost: The complex will be built at an aproximate cost $ 575,000,000

Design: It was awarded to the architectural firms of Minoru Yamasaki & Associates and Emery Roth & Sons. The World trade Center with its two twin towers, the highest in the worls, and its four lower buildings, will certainely become a landmark in Manhattan, symbolizing International Trade. The complez will include a 5 acre open plaza.

Access: The complex will be connected with the IRT, BMT and IND Subway Lines and with bus lines and highways. Furthermore, the terminal of the Trans-Hudson System (PATH) will be located under the World Trade Center itself, providing a direct link with Jersey City, Newark, Hoboken and the other New Jersey areas. Direct links are also planned with the various maritimes, railroad and airport terminals.

Office Space: The New York Port Authority accepts reservations for office space in the World Trade Center by firms connected with International Trade or by representatives of foreign companies, and will also rent exhibit areas. The World Trade Center will be completed in 1972 and will offer office space at rates comparable to the actual market value in New York, even if it provides the tenants with centralized services and communication not yet available in any other building. The area occupied by the proposed World Trade Center presents very variable soil characteristics, since partially it is a land fill, and partially it is constituted by natural alluvial deposits. Furthermore, it was an area occupied by many buildings, and therefore, up to a depth of 36 feet the soil was ridden with old foundations, piles, sewers and manholes, utility lines and various other obstacles (including a sunken ship). The natural soil is composed by sandy and silty strata covering a bank of tightly packed boulders resting on the bedrock.

The bedrock is formed of the characteristic Manhattan schist, with variable contents of quartz. This rock, extensively explored during the work by many borings, lay vertical strata and varies rapidly from almost pure quartz to mica. The water table follows the tide of the nearby Hudson River. It is in such a soil that an I.C.O.S. wall has been built, acting as perimeter walls as well as a protection for the excavation of the foundation for the World Trade Center, excavation that will reach the underlying bedrock.

The World Trade Center will be located in downtown Manhattan, the heart of the Wall Street business district, an area traditionally very active in developing and promoting international trade. The World Trade Center will increase this trade and will also bring change and progress to this historic area. The World Trade Center will benefit from a large transportation network centered in the building, serving visitors and businessmen alike. On the map on the left side of this page all the subway lines and stations in the vicinity of the World Trade Center are indicated. There is no other area in New York better serviced by the Public Transportation System.
